"I love this fabric, I'll take 2 yards!" "I don't know what I will make with this but I will take 3 yards, please!" "Wow, This is a steal for this fabric! I can't leave it since it's such a deal!"
Are you like me? Do you go to the fabric store "just to look" and leave your purse in the car? Or do you say "I will take cash, so I stick to my budget," and either pull out your credit card or run to the car because you thought you would have more self-control with your purse 50 feet from the store's front door? SMH and LOL It's okay! It happens to all of us who sew! Unfortunately, it doesn't matter your level of sewing, novice, intermediate, or advanced! We all suffer from "fabric overload syndrome! Prognosis? We can't go in a fabric store and not come out with something! :)
I will share 2 quick tips for organizing YOUR STASHE! I will also share links to some of my favorite crafter's websites for organizing tips and storage ideas. We all need other eyes to help us see our space's potential. Whether your goal is organizing space, connecting with like-minded craft souls, or searching for inspiration from each other's work and perspective, it's a universal code for crafters to help crafters be better crafters!
Tip 1. Old Furniture New Purpose
Repurpose that old dresser or other furniture sitting in the garage. Whether it's a vintage curio, an outdated dresser with large drawers, a gently used file cabinet, or grandma's cedar chest, it can be used for functional storage in your sewing space. PinCutSew shows us how she created a storage space from an old dresser with great drawer space! Dilyn shared how she quilted her file cabinets. Take a look here.
Tip 2. Keep those Boxes
I think we all get various-sized Amazon boxes at least 1 time a month. Well, if you are into keeping the planet green and reducing waste, you can repurpose shipping boxes and shoe boxes into pretty storage options. This keeps the fabric neat and clean and allows you to fit more into the space. You can attach an info card with yardage and fiber content and it's easier to slide in and out when selecting without disrupting your other fabrics. Watch this DIY by SamTimeTomorrow to sew up some pretty storage options for your space.
Rest assured, although there is NO CURE for this syndrome, there is hope for managing the stash you develop for this condition we have to learn to manage. Rarely, do creative people have only 1 craft syndrome. If we sew, we do AT LEAST one more craft discipline, like 2 to 3 more such as jewelry making, knitting or crocheting, painting, soap making, scrapbooking, etc.
Happy Sewing,
Felicia
